Research Indicates that a Majority of Canadians Say Wearing a Mask During the Coronavirus Pandemic is a Civic Duty

The result of online public surveys conducted by the research company Ledger and Associates has found that Canadians feel that local governments should order people to wear a mask in all indoor public spaces.

Covid-19 has lingered much longer than people initially expected, and the fear of catching it corresponds with people supporting making the wearing of masks mandatory.

The survey found that 87% of respondents felt wearing a mask was a civic duty because it protects others from COVID-19, while 21 percent thought it was an infringement on personal freedoms.

Mask Mandate Politicized

As in the United States, there has been some politicization of the mandatory masks issue, however, anti-maskers are a minority, and not a growing minority, in Canada.

A person who rejected mask-wearing and wound up hospitalized with a severe case of Covid-19 wanted to remain anonymous due to “internet hate.” He said he fell prey to party politics and felt that the virus was ‘politicized’. He now encourages people to work together to combat Covid-19.

“I didn’t wear a mask. I should’ve. I didn’t. I believed it was just the flu, that it was all going to go away, that it was political. I didn’t think a mask would help. I didn’t know. I listened to the wrong people say the wrong things. I was wrong.”

Need to Stay Diligent

The poll also found that some respondents had relaxed in terms of conscientiously following public safety guidelines. Meaning staying diligent with physical distancing, mask-wearing, and hand washing:

As new highly transmissible variants of the virus are identified there it has been suggested that wearing two masks offers more protection.
